Here are some things to consider when selecting an outfit...
Casual outfits in earth tones work best for outdoor portraits.
Lighter colors work well with light backgrounds, and darker colors create a more formal mood. When having a group portrait taken, dress everyone in similar styles and colors. You don't want to mix casual and formal, light and dark.
You want to draw attention to your face and use your clothing as a frame. Solid colors are best. Avoid large busy patterns, and very bright colors. Darker clothing tends to minimize body size. Long sleeves are recommended, they draw attention away from the arms and focus it on the face. Short sleeves are fine for children and babies.
If you need a haircut, it's best to have it done about a week ahead.
If you normally wear glasses, they should be part of your portrait. I control the reflections to the best of my ability by adjusting your pose. If you have had reflection problems in the past, you may want to ask your optometrist to loan you a fame with no lenses for your portrait.
Don't forget a fresh shave for the guys (or a neatly trimmed beard or mustache), and a little makeup for the ladies. Wear the accessories you normally would, such as earings, necklace and watch.
You want to look your best.
